ParaPathways Practice Test — Guide

ParaPathways Exam Day — What to Bring, What to Expect

The ParaPathways exam (ETS 5757) requires a government-issued photo ID, costs $55 at a Prometric center or $85 at home, and provides an on-screen 4-function calculator for the Mathematics subtest only. This guide covers everything you need to know before exam day — check-in process, calculator rules, pacing strategy, and what happens after you submit.

A note from Trieu Lee, founder

I built this tool because I watched paraeducators fail the exam not because they didn't know the content — but because they were blindsided by the interface, the calculator they'd never used, or logistics they hadn't prepared for. Read this once before your exam date.

What to bring to the ParaPathways exam

Bring one primary government-issued photo ID with your name exactly as it appears in your ETS registration. Acceptable forms include a passport, driver's license, state ID, or military ID. A discrepancy — even a missing middle name — can cause problems at check-in, so verify before you leave.

A secondary ID may be requested if your primary does not include a signature. A credit card, debit card, or work badge works.

Do not bring any of the following into the testing room:

If your job posting or district still references the ParaPro assessment, check our ParaPathways vs ParaPro transition guide — 26 states have confirmed the switch, and the ParaPro test is discontinued on September 1, 2026.

What happens during Prometric check-in

When you arrive at the Prometric testing center, you will go through a brief but structured check-in process. Knowing what to expect eliminates the anxiety of the unknown.

1
ID verification

Staff check both your name and photo. Your name must match your ETS registration exactly.

2
Photograph taken

A photo is stored with your test record. This is standard — not a cause for concern.

3
Digital consent form

You sign electronically agreeing to testing conditions and Prometric policies.

4
Security scan

A brief scan of pockets, wrists, and any items before entering the testing room. Turn out your pockets — empty is easiest.

5
Escort to your station

A proctor takes you to your assigned computer. The exam interface loads automatically.

💡
From the data: Earplugs are usually available at the front desk — ask before you go in. Other test-takers at adjacent stations may be taking different exams. The room is quiet but not silent.

Taking the ParaPathways exam at home

Test center
$55
Prometric location · In-person proctoring · Standard experience
At-home proctored
$85
Remote via webcam · Live proctor · ETS-approved option

Before registering, confirm your state's ParaPathways passing score requirement — cut scores vary by state and are not set by ETS. Once you know your target, choose your testing format. The at-home option is legitimate and widely used, but setup requirements are strict. Your testing environment must have a quiet, private room with a closed door, a working webcam and microphone, stable internet, a clean desk with no papers or extra monitors, and no other people present during the entire exam.

A live remote proctor monitors you via camera and screen share for the full duration. Before the exam begins, you will show your ID on camera and scan the room.

💬
My honest take: If you have a quiet, interruption-free space and reliable internet, the at-home option is more comfortable for most people — you skip the drive and the unfamiliar environment. But if your home has kids, pets, or unpredictable noise, the test center is the safer choice. Proctors can and do terminate exams for environment violations.

How the ParaPathways on-screen calculator works

This is the section most people skip — and then regret.

The on-screen 4-function calculator appears automatically at the start of the Mathematics subtest (5759). You do not need to request it. It does not appear during Reading and Writing — it is not permitted in that section.

Functions available: addition (+), subtraction (−), multiplication (×), division (÷), square root (√), plus/minus toggle (±), memory recall (MR), memory clear (MC), memory add (M+), and parentheses.

⚠️
Transfer Display is the feature most test-takers don't know about until they're already in the exam. It pastes the current calculator result directly into a numeric entry answer field. For numeric entry questions, use Transfer Display instead of retyping the number — it eliminates re-entry errors and saves time under pressure.
🛠
Why I built the standalone calculator page: I built the ParaPathways on-screen calculator on this site to be identical to the ETS interface. If you haven't practiced with it yet, open it now and run through 10 minutes of math questions. The goal is for the calculator to feel automatic on exam day — not something you're figuring out while the clock is running.
Practice before exam day

One last practice session with the real calculator?

Run a timed Mathematics section using the on-screen calculator — identical to what you'll see on exam day. No surprises.

How to pace yourself through both subtests

Both subtests average approximately 100 seconds per question — 85 minutes for 51 questions and 60 minutes for 36 questions. The math works out evenly, but in practice, some questions take 30 seconds and some take 3 minutes.

Reading & Writing
~100 sec/Q
85 min · 51 questions · No calculator
Mathematics
~100 sec/Q
60 min · 36 questions · Calculator ✓

The best pacing preparation is the ParaPathways timed practice test — it runs with the official countdowns so you can calibrate your speed before the real exam. Reading and Writing: For passage-based questions, read the question before the passage — it tells you exactly what to look for so you're not re-reading. For select-underlined grammar questions, read the full sentence once slowly. The error is usually verb tense, pronoun agreement, or a comma splice. Flag anything unclear and move on.

Mathematics: If you haven't run a full ParaPathways math practice test with the on-screen calculator yet, do it before exam day. Use the calculator for all arithmetic — there is no reward for mental math, and errors cost points. Use Transfer Display for numeric entry questions rather than retyping. Geometry and data analysis questions often run longer — flag and return if needed.

📊
What the practice session data shows: Test-takers who flag and return to difficult questions consistently score higher than those who try to resolve every question in sequence. If a question is taking longer than 2 minutes, flag it. You can always return.

What happens after you finish

When you submit the exam, you will see a preliminary score summary on-screen. This is unofficial but gives you an immediate read on where you stand.

Official score reports are available in your ETS account approximately 2–3 weeks after your test date. Your state education agency receives the official report separately. Your score is valid for 10 years from your test date.

If you need to retake, you can register immediately after receiving your official score. Your score report identifies which content categories were weakest — use our ParaPathways weak area tracker alongside your official report to build a targeted retake plan. A 20-question ParaPathways diagnostic will pinpoint exactly which content categories are costing you points — so your retake sessions target the right topics instead of covering everything again.
